An incident before lunch...

A quick post just because I have some time after the window.

I was walking out of Millenia Tower to go to lunch, generally minding my own business. This guy sidles up to me, and I turned around to seeif it's someone I know. It wasn't. I continued walking.

So this guy comes up to me and the following conversation ensued:

Guy: Excuse me, where's the nearest ATM?
Me: Which bank are you looking for?
Guy: UOB
Me: UOB's that way. [point in general direction of Millenia Walk]
Guy: Thank you very much! I'm not very familiar with this area because I don't work here. I'm visiting a client.
Me: I see. Alright. Have a good day. [attempt to walk away]
Guy: Hey wait. Can I have your number?
Me [suspiciously]: Why?
Guy: Don't worry, I'm not going to sell you anything. I just want to thank you for showing me where the ATM is.
Me: It's quite alright. You just go that way. [point again]
Guy: Why don't you give me your number, and I'll just text you mine.
Me: I don't think that's necessary. Thanks anyway. [makes to walk away again]
Guy: Let's be friends. I just want to thank you.
Me [weakly]: Why? It's really not necessary.
Guy: Or you could just give me your business card.
Me: Yeah. Thanks. It's really not necessary. Your ATM is that way.
Guy: [silence] Why not?
Me: Your ATM is that way.
Guy: Goodbye then. And thanks.

Wasn't that simply bizarre?

Coming back to Jesus

This song brought a smile to my heart and tears to my eyes. I think it's been a long time since I've heard music that makes my spine tingle and my heart sing.

As We Worship

Verse 1
As we worship You, let all the world come and see
How the mercy we received from You can set them free
As we worship You, let all this joy that fills our hearts
Bring a hunger and a hope to those who strayed so far

Chorus
As we bow in adoration and stand in reverent awe
Show Your majesty and glory, let Your anointing fall
As we declare Your name Lord Jesus as the only name who saves
May the power of Your salvation fill each heart we pray

Verse 2
As we worship You, let all the nations hear our song
Song of Jesus and His blood that proved His love for all
As we worship You, may all the lost and broken come
May they hear Your still small voice call out their names each one

My brother is an idiot

Just the other day, my brother was helping me to fix up my new study table. It was made of glass and chrome and therefore rather fragile. He was screwing the legs down and adjusting it to the appropriate height. Being completely helpless in these sorts of things, I simply hovered around to fetch tools or whatever.

Eventually, it was done, but to test it out, he asked that I very cautiously sit on the table so as to test the weight and ensure that the legs are screwed on tightly enough. So very gingerly, I placed my butt on the table, and one by one, lifted my legs off the floor.

My brother stepped back, surveying his work with some satisfaction, and said: "Good! Now we know the table can hold 100kg."

Secondary school daze

We met up some weeks ago, and in conversation, I*da insisted I was one of those butt lazy students that never did any work in school but manage to do well (not as well as I*da though). I*da claimed that I spoilt her collecting homework record, and she sent this email to me today to prove it. Now, since this blog is in the public domain, I'm gonna exercise some due diligence and disguise the names a bit so I*da and Che*ryl's adoring fans cannot find it.

I*da: You are just gonna lurve this, Yiling.
Che*ryl: I finally remember the names of our classmates... I*da and me are by far the model students amongst the 4 of us.

At this point, allow me to explain the results and vindicate myself. If you look at the first semester, I didn't hand in homework a total of 3 times. If you notice Noe's (register number 9), there's a half-check right there, and 3 question marks further down. And if you look at register number 10, you'll see that our Superstar National Swimmer was quite delinquent as well, with a total of 5 weeks of homework not handed in, with Donna (register number 14) bringing up the rear. Che*ryl has a dubious-looking question mark in the third-to-last week, and I*da, as always, is an infuriatingly responsible student.

And here are my results for semester 2 for analysis.

Ah. This is beautiful. I didn't hand in my homework only twice that semester. Ok, so I was late one time. Che*ryl missed one too. Noe missed 3 and Shei*la missed 5, with one blank in the second-last week! Shir*ene missed 6 altogether. Miss Rockstar Swimmer HANDED IN her homework twice. Now, how can I possibly be the delinquent one? *blink blink*

Me: Ah. I was really not as delinquent as I remember. Seems I was a pretty consistent student! Good on me!
I*da: Eh, don't be too happy bub, this was in sec 3!!! It went downhill in sec 4. Hahahaha!! I was reading my diary yesterday about how I was mad at you for not handing up your homework. How irritating I was. Should've just left you to languish...tsk tsk. [Golly. If I'd known that collecting homework meant that much to her, I'd have taken the time to copy and hand it in. Cheryl has the right idea.]
Che*ryl: You're so cute la I*da. If I were u, I wouldn't even bother. I'll leave her in her little world, her day-dreaming and guitar playing. Hahaha! Yiling was also the messiest in class in Sec4. Books just spawled at the side of her desk, I remember so well.
Me: Haha. Rubbish.. You guys are hallucinating! I was a good girl!
I*da: I think someone's deluded. Like, very deluded.
Me: I think I'm gonna like, blog about this. To vindicate myself. :P
Che*ryl: Good good, go and blog. At least something I can relate to.
I*da: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAaaaaaa...I'm glad I found it then. I got diary entries about feeling like a reject and fighting with Yiling. Man, I'm glad we're still friends, Yiling.
Me: HAah. I'm glad too. *hug*

Home

Yes. I have moved home.

In the process of moving back, I have lost my journal, my Nike bag, my nailclipper, my guitar tuner, BB charger... You get the idea.

But most of all, I lost my journal! GAAAAAHHHHH!!! Where are you, my black leather bound slightly-smaller-than-A4-sized journal?

Good to be back!

Ok, I know my recent posts have been just snippets of conversations with people on IM. But well that's my life at this point, isn't it? Anyway, an update for those of you not in the know, I've officially moved out of OH and back home! My room looks like a hurricane tore through here, and there's gonna be a lot of adjusting to do in the next 2 months, but I guess I can say that I'm glad to be home!

This is part of a conversation with my brother. Once again, I am introduced to his slightly acerbic sense of humour.

Me: Hey! $223 right?
Bro: what?
Me: For the HDD..
Bro: yup
Me: Okie I transfer. Check in 5 mins.
Bro: yay
Me: Done!
Bro: eh err.. i dun need the extra 27 bux
Me: Haha. Ner mind.
Bro: zzzzzzzzzzz
Bro: tell u liao
Me: Treat it as a longsuffering fund for having to hear the parents' nagging these 5 years.
Bro: then its not enough. lol
Bro: oh well its too troublesome to transfer back
Me: Hahah. I cache my MSN conversations. Dun worry lah. Treat it as GST and service charge.
Bro: so do i. haha.
Bro: dun worry i tell it to them in their face too lol
Me: Ooh. Brave.. *clap clap*
Bro: wow the sarcasm is so thick i thot it was ur head lol
Me: Why you little....
Bro: u really lathered it on didn't you. lol

2 conversations with 2 shipb*rokers.

Me: Eh tomorrow lunch can meh?
Me: You got half day?
Broker1: oh yah...tomorrow is half day
Broker1: how how
Me: Ok I need to send MRPL at 3.30pm.. So I need to hang around anyway. Plats finish at 12.30.. But if you want, we can do it next week! Maybe you need to do spring cleaning. Hahaha.
Broker1: i'm homeless, therefore no need to clean leh
Me: Haha. How come homeless?
Me: Lost your ring again ah?
Me: Wahahahaha!!!

Here's some background. His wife made him sleep on the couch when he lost his wedding ring twice in the past. So that was quite funny.

Here's another conversation with Sandro, another shipbroker.

Broker2: u sux
Me: You also!
Broker2: why so?
Me: Why so?
Broker2: yah why am i sux
Me: Same reason you think I suck.
Broker2: why do u tink i think u sux?
Me: Cuz I can read your mind.
Broker2: what am i tinking now?
Me: It's too fuzzy. It only comes to me on occasion.
Broker2: u suck!
Me: You also.
Broker2: why?
Me: Same reason you think I suck.
Broker2: why u think i think u suck?
Me: Cuz I can read your mind.
Broker2: what am i tinking now??
Me: That Sandro is a freakin moron.
Broker2: wrong!
Me: Ha!
Broker2: that proves u cant read my mind!
Me: I knew you'd say that.
Broker2: U SUCK!
Me: You also!
Broker2: WHY?
Me: I dun wanna talk to you anymore!

Despite being a scholar and ex-Rafflesian, he really isn't too bright. Which is why branding, as we marketing majors know, can only get you so far.

CRuSH

I stumbled upon the PlanetCRuSH website and saw this article that Hsiao Ling wrote a gazillion years ago (Yes, that's me in the picture right there). I didn't know I was so energetic in the past. Must be getting old now.

Accolades aside (it was chosen as best project in 2002 or some such year, and showcased to President Nathan), this project was one of the most meaningful and memorable projects that I had ever done, because of its scale and its ability to impact young lives - Both the lives of the university students and the secondary students that the volunteers such as I train on a weekly basis. This was my heart of ministry from the very beginning, and I'm glad to have been a part of bringing it into SMU.
